The East Coast
The East Coast of Corfu has by far the largest number of hotels on the island. From Nissaki and Barbati through the popular tourist resorts of Dassia, Ipsos and Pirgos on the coast to the north of Corfu Town down to Moraitika and Messonghi to the south, you can be sure to find a resort that caters to the type of holiday you are looking for - from budget hotels and rented accommodation to the finest quality luxury properties.
To the south of the town is the place perhaps most visited on the island – the Achilleion Palace. This once belonged to the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi. It was built in 1890 in neo-classical style, and statues depicting the Nine Muses, Shakespeare, Lord Byron and of course Achilles Dying and Achilles Triumphant, adorn the garden to remind us of the lonely Empress. The garden and its view are undoubtedly magnificent and a small museum houses the personal possessions of the former owners.
