South Corfu
The South of Corfu has a population of about 11.000, about half of whom live in and around the town of Lefkimmi. They are an independent people, holding to their traditional way of life and many say that it is a completely different world from the rest of the island.
The south has a number of popular resorts. On the southern tip of the island is Kavos, a modern tourist resort with tavernas and restaurants, clubs and bars, and a busy beach, which attracts young people from all over the world, especially from Britain. Boats leave from Kavos for Paxos, Antipaxos and Sivota.
Boukari is a seaside village with tavernas right on the water’s edge. Archaeological studies mention the existence of a Neolithic settlement here.
Halikounas and Agios Georgios share one huge beach, 10 kilometres in length, with sand dunes, fine sand and shallow water. Even at the height of the tourist season, you can be sure of finding a secluded spot to yourself. The resort of Agios Georgios offers a variety of hotels and rented accommodation, restaurants and bars, and sea sports of all kinds.
To the north of Agios Georgios is Lake Korission, a lagoon extending over an area of 1500 acres. The entire area, from the lake to the far edge of the nearby forest, constitutes an important wetlands habitat, where 126 different kinds of birds have been observed.
