Corfu Town

The Liston is Corfu Town’s most traditional meeting place, where people gather to read newspapers and drink coffee or ouzo at the old-established cafes. Here you can watch cricket matches on summer afternoons while sipping ginger beer, or parades by the philharmonic bands or majorettes, as well as religious processions. The Liston is a terrace with its series of arches fronting the road, designed by the French in the early 19th century, and is based on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. It forms the western side of the Esplanade, which is the largest square in southern Europe.
There are many places for the visitor to visit in the town. There is the archaeological site of Palaiopolis, which was the ancient city of Corfu, and the nearby Palace of Mon Repos. The presence of the British, French and Venetians over the centuries can be witnessed in the town’s architecture and especially the Old and New Fortresses as well as the Palace of Saint Michael & Saint George, which now houses an impressive Museum of Asiatic Art.
Alternatively, you can wander round the narrow streets of the Old Town with its small shops with traditional products and visit the church of Saint Spyridon, the Patron Saint of the island.
